10 Reasons for Strategic Planning

Those that fail to plan - plan to fail

1. Identifies your competitive advantage - what your company potentially does better than any other company.

2. Clarifies what business you're in and the customer needs it is presently endeavoring to serve.

3. Visualizes the future - the direction it is headed, the customer focus it should have, the market position it should try to occupy, the business activites to be pursued and the capabilities it plans to develop.

4. Inventories the company's strengths, opportunities, challenges and weaknesses. Take both the SWOT and PEST evaluations.

5. Profiles your customers - what are our customer's needs, motivations and characteristics. How do we uniquely provide value to our customers? What should we improve to grow our customer base?

6. Write your goals and objectives - base them on the analysis and customer profile. Objectives set the agenda. Desgn measuable, quantifiable goals to meet the objectives.

7. Assesses your resources - prioritize goals based on available resources and objectives. Identify new assets to aquire - both intellectual and material, to acquire.

8. Take action that lead to implementing your goals and objectives. Renew your presence and establish new presences.

9. Keep score. Build a graphic pro forma dashboard in Excel to scenerio, target and measure goals and objectives. Keep it updated and in front of you.

10.Make strategy a habit. Support with people, money, time, systems, and above all communication.

A strategic plan is a living document. It does not have to be 100% complete to start using your strategic plan. A business without a plan is like a car without a steering wheel. A rough draft is better than no plan at all. Put your plan on paper so you can look back at 2011 and celebrate your well-earned success.

Recognizing

 Your Power

Time is framed in phases, processes and episodes. Look at any series of events in your life, profession or business enterprise to see this.

Things happen by intention or happenstance. Some you can trace to an orgin; a begetting. Others you may become aware of as it's happening; becoming. There are times when you don't know something happened until a result has occurred; begoning.

When you become aware whether at begetting, becoming or begoning you can have some power over it.

That's important, being able to exert control. The opportunity appears where you can be intentional and start to do something with what's happening.

We don't often think of time that way. So often we are in the flow being pushed and pulled by financial, social, cultural, political and mechanical technological forces.

A planning and expediting discipline can be applied to the flow, moving things along, revealing space for the authentic you to appear.

Then time becomes the present where you are being both active and at rest; taking on a zen like timelessness.
